To educate staff, students and our wider community to participate in a rapidly changing world where work and leisure activities are increasingly transformed by technology and to utilise ICT effectively as a tool for learning and to support and develop life long learning.

Role of ICT in St Joseph’s College

College Aims for ICT

  • To encourage students to build upon their previous experience and to become independent users of ICT;
  • To provide the resources and expertise that will allow students to be discriminating and discerning in the selection and use of a range of Information and Communication Technology resources.
  • To develop a broad and balanced experience of the range of information and communication systems and their applications and an understanding of their capabilities and limitations.
  • Select, use and design information and communication systems to carry out a range of tasks and to solve problems, making effective use of appropriate principles and techniques.
  • Develop an understanding that the skills and concepts which relate to ICT, when used appropriately and effectively, can enhance the quality of learning, living and working.

ICT offers opportunities for students to:

  • Extend and enhance learning across all areas of the curriculum;
  • Develop their ICT capability and understand the importance of information.
  • Develop their skills in using hardware and software so as to enable them to manipulate information;
  • Develop their ability to apply ICT to other areas of the curriculum;
  • Develop good Health and Safety attitudes and practice.
  • Develop an awareness of the impact of ICT on individuals, organisations and society;


In order to achieve these aims, the college will:

  • Provide opportunities for students to gain experience of ICT through a range of subjects across the curriculum.
  • Assist students development in ICT and recognise that it should be continuous and progressive throughout the key stages.
  • Use ICT effectively to deliver curriculum areas of the Northern Ireland Revised Curriculum effectively.
  • Provide appropriate support for subject areas to develop their use of ICT according to the Revised Curriculum.

Students will be able to:

  • Use a range of software and hardware resources effectively in all areas of the curriculum.
  • Use the internet as a tool for investigation and learning.
  • Become familiar with the use of the internet, electronic mail and on-line learning.
  • Use LNI to access up-to-date resources.

General rules on computer suites

  • No student is allowed to enter and work in a computer suite without a teacher being present, although Post 16 students may use computer suites if not timetabled for use. In exceptional circumstances, if a student is given permission to leave a classroom to go to a computer room to complete work or print out permission must be sought from the teacher using the computer suite and a permission note should be sent with the student.
  • Any piece of equipment found to be faulty or broken should be reported to ICT Technician.
  • ICT equipment should not be tampered with.
  • Staff can use the booking form to book in a class for a particular activity.

C2K Managed Wi-Fi is available throughout the school.

All classrooms ar equipped with a Teacher Workstation  Interactive Whiteboard & Projector and Apple TV.

All staff are expected to incorporate the use of ICT in their own subject area in line with requirements of DENI.

The packages chosen will take account of the needs of the learning in a particular subject area. This will be discussed with subject leaders and/or class teachers.

Staff are encouraged to make use of ICT to develop in their students an interest and enthusiasm for the subject.

In order to assist all staff in their role of promoting the use of ICT staff training is available, either on an individual basis from the ICT Co-ordinator or through a planned training programme over a specific period. This training will be delivered by the ICT CASS support team.

Where advice is required for a subject specialism an advisor from CASS will be contacted to offer guidance and support.

All subject leaders are kept informed of relevant courses which are organised for exceptional closure days or as Inset courses.

Where a particular teacher within a department is not confident to use ICT, special arrangements are made within the Department to ensure that all classes obtain access to ICT either by using another member of the Department or by making special arrangements with the ICT Co-ordinator.

Access to ICT rooms is made by a booking facility. Booking File is located in each computer room.

Mrs Brown is the C2k manager and calls can be logged through ICT technician to the C2k Help Desk from where assistance will be given either over the telephone or by call-out from a C2k engineer.

Monitoring use of ICT across the curriculum

An annual audit of staff is conducted every year.

Staff were requested to identify what software packages were used in their department/subject area. The information is collated and distributed to all staff.

Staff members have attended training facilitated by CCEA regarding the assessment of Using ICT as a Cross Curricular skill.

ICT is also evidenced in schemes of work.

Assessment and reporting

Students will be requested to keep a folder within their My Documents dedicated to all ICT related assessment tasks, with this folder sub-divided into each subject area.

Teachers will draft a matrix to monitor the assessment of the 5’s (Assessment not compulsory until 2011).


Tasks will be modified to meet the requirements of students with special needs. Tasks will be differentiated to allow students to progress to a level of which they are capable of achieving.

Staff development

An audit of staff is conducted annually which highlights training required. Training is provided by ICT co-ordinator, CASS, Cluster group meetings, inset relevant to staff’s own Area of Learning.

Backup and security

The files and network system are backed up regularly by C2k. The virus checker is updated regularly by C2k. 

The C2k Manager or Designated Assistant issue staff with an initial password. Subsequent to this staff create their own for privacy purposes.


  • Create password using alphanumeric characters.
  • Change periodically.
  • Do not use a password that is easily associated with oneself.


  • C2k manager issues staff with user name and password.
  • Staff are requested to change this password to one of their choosing and change it regularly.
  • At no time should staff allow a student to log on using their username and password.
  • If a user forgets his/her password it is re-allocated by Miss Earls (C2k Administrator) or Technician.
  • Students are not allowed to share a username and password with fellow students.

Software Policy

  • Software should be previewed where possible before purchase.
  • A site licence is required when software is to be used on more than one machine at the same time. Software should not be put on machines unless it is authorised.
  • Specialist software for use by a specific department should be purchased by that department from own budget allocation.
  • A check should always be made with regard to the suitability of a software package for compatibility with machines/network.
  • Registration Cards should always be signed and returned to the software publisher.
  • Master discs should always be BACKED UP and stored in a safe place in the event of corruption or UPGRADES being required.
  • Students are to be discouraged from bringing in discs from home to use on computers in college.  This is to reduce the risk of viruses contaminating college computers.  Students are therefore encouraged to use break-time and after college to use college computers.

However, circumstances may prevail where students need to use discs/memory pens from home. In these cases students must be made aware of their responsibility regarding virus-checking procedures. Post 16 students are given responsibility of using memory pens safely. If a virus is detected on a disc from a home computer under no circumstances should this disc be used in college.

College policy for the acceptable use of the internet

The Internet is an electronic information highway connecting many thousands of computers all over the world and millions of individual subscribers. This global network of networks’ is not governed by any organisation/body. This means that there are no limits or checks on the kind of information that is accessible to Internet users. The educational value of appropriate information on the Internet is substantial. However, as the Internet consists of information from a vast array of sources worldwide, it includes some material that is not of educational value in the context of the college. The material includes information, which may be inaccurate, abusive, profane, sexually oriented, and disrespectful of religion, racist or illegal. In order to guard young people from any dangers, it is the responsibility of college staff and the parent/carer of each student to educate the student about his responsibility when using the Internet.

Use of the Internet by colleges is growing rapidly. The problems and issues that have been highlighted by the media concern most colleges. Whilst some of the media interest is hype, there is real cause for concern. A major area for concern is access to pornography. Other areas of unacceptable materials, such as racist, extremist, political or violent material is beyond the scope of most censoring programs.

Electronic mail (e-mail)

This is a way of sending messages from one person to another via the Internet. Each Internet user has a unique e-mail address (i.e. anybody@yahoo.co.uk) and by sending a message to their address, the person receiving the message can read the next time she connects to the internet. Students are not permitted to use hotmail.com. Students will log on to the email address supported by C2k and will only use this email service when requested to do so by a class teacher.

Student access to the internet

The college will encourage students to make use of the rich information resources available on the internet, together with the development of appropriate skills to analyse and evaluate such resources. These skills will be essential in the society our students live in now and in the future.

Access to on-line resources will enable students to explore thousands of libraries, databases, and bulletin boards while exchanging messages with people throughout the world. The college believes that the benefits to students from access to information resources and increased opportunities working on live with others nationally or internationally outweigh the disadvantages. But ultimately, parents and carers of minors are responsible for setting and making clearly understood the standards that their children should follow when using media and information sources.

Internet access for students in colleges will be available only on computers that are in highly used areas of the college such as classrooms and computer rooms.

No student will be given access to an Internet connected computer in a store, preparation room or other non-public area where a member of staff is not constantly present.

Students are responsible for good behaviour on the college computer network, just as they are on and off college premises. While the use of ICT is a required aspect of the Northern Ireland Curriculum, access to the Internet remains a privilege and not a right. It is given to all students who act in a considerate and responsible manner, and will be withdrawn if they do not follow standards of use laid down in the college’s rules.

General rules on Internet Usage

Students are responsible for good behaviour on the Internet just as they are in a classroom or a college corridor.

General college rules apply.

Access should only be made by the official, permitted logon name and password. This official logon name/password must not be made available to any other person.

The Internet is provided for students to carry out research and to teach them how to electronically communicate with others. Access to the college network and the Internet remains a privilege, not a right and that access requires responsibility.

Individual users of the Internet are responsible for their behaviour and their communications over the network. It is presumed that users will obey college rules and standards of the internet use and will respect the agreements they have signed.

When using the Internet, all STUDENTS must obey all copyright, libel, fraud, discrimination and obscenity laws.

Computer storage areas and floppy disks will be treated like college lockers. Staff may review files and communications to ensure that users are using the system responsibly. Users should not expect that files stored on servers or disks will always be private.

Unacceptable use:

  • Retrieving, sending or displaying offensive messages or pictures.
  • Using offensive, foul language.
  • Harassing, insulting or attacking others.
  • Damaging computers, computer systems or computer networks.
  • Breaking copyright laws.
  • Using another user’s password.
  • Accessing others’ folders, work or files.
  • Intentionally wasting limited resources (i.e on-line time and printing materials).
  • Downloading of programs, games, screensavers, wallpaper from the internet or uploading the same from disc or CD ROM is forbidden.

On-line activities that are not permitted include:

  • Searching, viewing and/or retrieving materials that are not related to the aims of the curriculum or future careers.
  • Copying, saving or redistributing copyright protected material without approval.
  • Subscribing to any services or ordering any goods or services, unless specifically approved by St Joseph’s College.
  • Playing computer games or using interactive chat sites or newsgroups is forbidden.
  • Using the network in such a way that use of the network by other users is disrupted (e.g. downloading large files during peak usage times).
  • Publishing, sharing or distributing any personal information about a user (such as: home address, telephone no. etc).
  • Any activity that breaks a college rule.

Acceptable use:

On-line activities, which are encouraged, include for example:

  • The development of students’ skills in ICT and their general research skills.
  • Use of the Internet to investigate and research college subjects and cross-curricular themes.
  • Use of the Internet to investigate careers and Further Education Courses.
  • Use of email for communication between students and teachers, between colleges and industry (for educational purposes only).


  1. Breaking of the above rules will result in a temporary or permanent ban on Internet use. Students will be immediately barred from using the computer network and his actions will be dealt with under the normal disciplinary procedures. Exclusion from using the college’s computer network will prevent a student from accessing/using resources/files stored in his name.
  2. Further disciplinary action may be added in line with existing practice on inappropriate language or behaviour. Additional disciplinary action may be used and, when applicable, the police or other appropriate agencies i.e The Examination Council for Curriculum, The Department of Education, Social Services, will be informed of a student breaking the rules regarding irresponsible use of the internet.
  3. When applicable, police or local authorities may be involved.
